Much of the current investment in Built Environment does not meet needs of people it serves. The Institute of Neuroarchitecture seeks to change that.
We work with Developers, Policy Makers and Governments to improve the value of the Built Environment to society.
What is Neuroarchitecture
Neuroarchitecture is the discipline dealing with the design of spaces by studying the relationship between health and buildings with the application of neuroscience.
Institutes of Neuroarchitecture aims
Measurability – Moves the dial from being intuitively right to factually right
Application – Turning the academic research into commercial relevance
Influencing – Influencing government agency policy around the globe – turning a ‘nice to have’ to compliance.
Three facts behind why these aims must happen:
1.In 2023 the global population had reached approximately 8 billion people – doubled what it was in 1975. While earlier UN forecasts estimated 10.9 billion by 2100, the most recent projections suggest global population may peak at around 10.4 billion before the end of the century.
2. By 2050, the world’s ten largest cities are projected to each have between 32 and 42 million residents, according to UN urbanisation forecasts. Some estimates place the largest above 50 million depending on growth patterns.
3. As of 2023, 56% of the world’s population live in cities. By 2050 UN predicts this will grow to 68%
4. In Australia approximately 83–86% of the population live in urban centres.
The consequences are:
1. An unprecedented number of humans will be living cheek by jowl to each other.
2. Neuroarchitecture research has already demonstrated that our built environment affects our moods
3. With many people living together, it is critical to have environments that build resistance, secure communities and unlocks human potential, rather than hindering it
Manifesto/Purpose
Pull
A world where individuals, communities and society experience the positive wellness and well-being brought about when the principles of neuroscience are applied to the built environment.
Push
The pandemic, climate change, housing shortage, global population growth, over 61% of the population live in cities has brought about an awareness (publicly and politically) to the fact that the current approach to the development of built environments has to change if people are to cohabitate together safely, productively and happily.
Barriers
Historically and currently, regulations, cost, funding, politics, and time are the main drivers property developments are chained to adhere to.
As a discipline
Neuroarchitecture is interested in how the environment modifies brain chemistry and emotions, thoughts, and behaviours.
The built environment has the power to generate various emotions which leads to change in our mental states, also impacts creativity, how we feel, decision making, memory, learning, and most importantly, our well-being and happiness.
The focus of the Institute of Neuroarchitecture is to apply learning from neuroscience to the built environment to help shape space and places which delight and inspire.
The pandemic has born witness to the impact wellness and well-being has to individuals, the community and society at large.
Our goal is to establish neuroarchitecture as a force for good.
